At short notice, Liqson installed two double-walled stainless steel tanks with gas scrubbers and collector trays at Steelanol on behalf of ArcelorMittal. The rental tanks are for the storage of ammonia 24%. Liqson fitted the tanks with the necessary quick couplings and flexible hoses for a quick commissioning.
Steelanol
The technology that will be developed in this project will make it possible to reuse some of the carbon emitted by the steel industry.
Carbon-rich industrial waste gases are converted into advanced bioethanol for use in the transport sector through the use of a new gas fermentation technology.
This recycling will reduce the Ghent site’s CO2 emissions by 350,000 tonnes a year. It is the first step in the “decarbonisation” of the steel sector.
Ammonia
Ammonia is an inorganic compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with the chemical formula NH3. Ammonia at room temperature is a colourless, toxic gas with a distinctive, very pungent smell. The gas is not only soluble in water in very large quantities (up to as much as 33 mass%), but also reacts with water.
Temporary storage
After the first run, the Steelanol unit goes into shutdown for several weeks for maintenance and modifications. Among other things, some modifications must be made to the ammonia installation. To do so, they have to empty their tank and store the remaining quantity of ammonia in rental tanks from Liqson.
As mentioned, double-walled stainless steel tanks were selected for this application:
- Storage according to Vlarem II
- Fully double-walled construction
- Digital level measurement with display
- Permanent digital leak detection
- Overfill notification at 95% full (Audiovisual signal)
Liqson was also called in to provide the following accessories:
- HDPE gas scrubbers
- PVC collector trays
- UPE suction-pressure hoses
- Manifolds & ball valves
Thanks to the large stock of tanks and accessories, the customer was sure that Liqson could supply the necessary equipment on time.
